93 Points “Off-dry and medium-dry rieslings are making a comeback and not before time. These wines blend biting acidity with measured sweetness to make for a beautiful package, as a pre-dinner treat or for spicy dishes. This is a good option for anyone new to the style with its razor sharp balance and elegant fruits. Pale watery white in colour, it has attractive orchard fruit aromas with some gentle stony complexity. It’s then fine, and light weight, with more citrus fruits and that sweetness tucked in behind a bolt of acidity that makes for a mouthwatering finish. It will come into its own with a spicy Thai fish curry.” Winepilot, Angus Hughson
93 Points “With 21 grams of residual sugar per litre, you can see where the RS21 on the label comes from. A wonderfully balanced wine where the sugar and acidity sing harmoniously, spicy Asian cuisines await. Lemon juice and green apple skin speak to you from the outset. A hint of lime and melon slide in but its the yin and yang effect of sugar and acid that is the centre piece. That balance is on point. Cleansing and refreshing, it’s a great drink in the right company.” Qwine
92 Points “A new medium-dry or off-dry riesling from master of the variety, Castle Rock. Low alcohol and that slight sweetness give this wine a softness; a lilt. It makes for incredibly more-ish drinking. Grape, citrus, florals and apple characters keep you diving in for more. There’s a gentle, sweet-fruited ease to the palate but the finish is dry, almost chalky. It’s a fundamentally delicious wine.” The Winefront, Campbell Mattinson
Top 10 Australian Wines for Spring 2021 “Castle Rock Estate is an established winery in the Great Southern part of Western Australia, where their rieslings are complex and perfectly balanced. According to winemaker Rob Diletti, this wine is made from 100 per cent free-run juice, cool-fermented to retain fruit expression and freshness and then arrested early to preserve some natural residual sugar in the wine. Expect green tropical fruits on the nose, with a perfect balance of sweetness and acidity as it flows along your palate.” Hunter & Bligh
“Very pale lemon-green colour, with a herbal nose of bay leaf, nettles and green pear suggesting cooler origins. At just 10% alcohol this has an enticing delicacy and composed line with a little bit of residual sugar to offset the lilting line of acidity—though it doesn’t taste sweet. If you like your rieslings humming on the herbal side with a salivating line of acidity, you’ll really like this.” The Real Review, Gabrielle Poy, Aug 2021
“The 2021 Castle Rock Estate ‘RS 21’ Riesling is a nod to the Germanic halb- trocken style, albeit in a definite New World expression, with 21% residual sugar. It toes a vibrant line between the mellowness of the sugar component and the zingy natural acid The generous mid- palate juiciness releases varietal characteristics of lime floralness and hints of grapefruit underpinned by regional minerality.” The Grape Hunter, Gilbert Labour, Aug 2021
“This was a very pleasant wine indeed. Gee it’s beautifully balanced. The natural acidity providing freshness and vibrancy while the 21grams residual sugar adding some body to the mid and back palate. It has lovely, smooth lime characters (yes, that seems odd but it’s true), a nice textural feel as well, and finishes a little crisp and refreshing. There’s no doubt Rob Diletti has nailed the acid and sugar equilibrium. Like its two siblings, this too is great value.” Words from a Wineglass, Sept 2021
“Youthful in the glass, pale-straw colour. Lemon and floral aromas, a touch doughy. Tye flavours are well and truly in the lemon and citrus pith zone, there’s a greener nettle and spice edge at the end. The acid is bright, crunchy and minerally.” The Real Review, Aaron Brasher
