Tasting Notes

Colour: A light and pale colour with green hues.

Bouquet: Intense lime juice backed by a delicate fragrance of orange blossom and lavender giving a bouquet that is zesty and fresh, yet also of great depth.

Palate: The feature of the palate is the tightly wound structure that is enveloped by beautiful rich lime juice fruit characters. This fruit richness provides the generosity and succulence that is so appealing as a young wine. The core of natural acidity creates that great structure, finesse and length for the wine. The balance between the fruit generosity and tight acid structure is the hallmark of Castle Rock Rieslings. Lively, crisp and with an attractive delicacy now, this wine will blossom with age for at least twenty years.

Food Accompaniment

Ideal aperitif wine, will also accompany fish, delicate crustacean and mild Asian dishes.

Cellaring Potential

Excellent ageing potential. It will continue to improve through its first year and then plateau, should drink well for at least 20 years.

97 Points “Draws on six estate blocks; 100% free-run juice. The perfumed apple and lime blossom bouquet doesn’t prepare you for the searing intensity of the slatey acidity and lemon zest palate. This is purity on a grand scale.” The Australian, James Halliday

96 Points “One of the most consistent wines in Australia. As usual this is a beautifully textured and piercingly pure expression of Riesling. Citrus, crushed rock and lemon blossom frame the nose, the palate has a mineral backbone derived from citrus and slate; there is a chalkiness of texture and lemon pith like grip to finish. The length to finish in considerable and there is a faint embellishment of jasmine.” The Wine Reviewer, Patrick Eckel, Oct 2021

95 Points “The Porongurup Range is a low slung granite mountain range that gives its name to the local wine region. It also seems to give the best regional wines a very specific character – a stoniness or minerality that help to create some of the best rieslings anywhere in the country, including this one. Pale watery white in colour, there is a powerful core of tight, youthful fruits. Citrus, blossom and then that rocky, salty element with a slightly riper pear element also coming through. It’s only gently aromatic and keeping many of its cards close to the chest right now. What follows is a dry, fresh, spicy and citrus flavoured palate with good impact and again that stony element really lifting it into the stratosphere. Balance is good and the finish long, all of which is very promising for enjoyment over the next decade, although it could do with a couple of years to find its feet.” Winepilot, Angus Hughson

95 Points “Sophisticated is the word that sums up this Riesling from Castle Rock Estate. What a treat! Apple sours, green apple skin and lime juice, a minerally undertow does its work in the background. Wonderful textural feels reach out for engagement. Soft acidity sizzles and cleanses. A terrific drink for the money.” Qwine, Sept 2021

93+ points “Textured, slatey riesling with ample texture and length. Indeed it’s a scorching finish, ripped with acid, full metal with a jacket of citrus, rind and juice, plus pulp. There’s an unfettered, natural feel to this. A dry, grapey, gravel-like drive. It’ll be fascinating to see where this is at in a few year’s time.” The Winefront, Campbell Mattinson

92 Points “Lemon-green in colour, this takes a swirl or two to release its aromatics of lime leaf, green apples and wet earth. The palate is fine and dry, with a cool-fruited profile and saline notes leading the charge. This is a wine of finesse.” The Real Review, Gabrielle Poy

“The 2021 Castle Rock Estate Porongurup Riesling ($26) is well-balanced, again, showing signs of regional and terroir minerality and savouriness. The same varietal characteristics of musky lime blossom / grapefruit aromas and flavours glide smoothly across the palate.” The Grape Hunter, Gilbert Labour

“From Porongurup sub-region of WA’s Great Southern Region, this refreshing Castle Rock Estate 2021 Porongurup Riesling is pale straw and has honeysuckle aromas and crisp lime front-palate flavour. The middle palate shows green apple, lemon curd and gunmetal and a finish of steely acid.” Newcastle Herald, John Lewis

“This one is certainly not shy on the nose. Nicely aromatic straight up in similar fashion to the Skywalk with citrus and floral characters. Generous fruit flavours on the palate where it’s more limey than lemony, a minerally note there too. The acidity is obvious but is so delicate and fine on the excellent, elegant and lengthy finish. This is exceptional value for money and would easily sit alongside those in the $30+ range.” Words from a Wineglass
