Colour: Deep red colour.

Bouquet: A classic cool-climate Shiraz nose which shows plum fruit, spice and black pepper characters. There is some subtle complexity and quality French oak characters of char and cedar.

Palate: A rich and generous front palate fills the mouth with plum fruits. There is a thread of black pepper running the length of the palate, reminding us of its cool climate origins. The wine has great poise and balance thanks to balanced acidity and firm yet ripe tannins. This also provides power and drive, yet, wonderful restraint. The high quality French oak adds cedary characters and blends really well with the cool climate spice notes. The wine has great length and the flavours linger in the mouth long after the wine has gone.

An ideal complement to red meats and hearty dishes. Will also go well with ripe cheeses at the end of a meal.

Will continue to improve and develop complexity with age; cellar for 8 to 10 years.

REVIEWS & AWARDS for the 2018 vintage

93 Points "Here is a good example with both attractive ripe fruit and a savoury edge. The wine is deeply coloured and a little closed and intriguing to start, needing some time to come out of its shell. Once it does there is mulberry, earth and white pepper fruits supported by quality oak. The palate is concentrated with its dark brooding fruits showing good focus but in an elegant rather than the more usual big Australian Shiraz style. Fruit is also supported by moderate tannins and then the wine finishes with leather and tobacco highlights. It is a well pitched introduction to Great Southern Shiraz that is delicious now but will also improve with some more time in the bottle. Tee it up with steak and kidney pie for a quality night in." Winepilot, Angus Hughson

93 Points  "These Castle Rock Estate wines are always well dressed and ready to party. This Shiraz from the Great Southern is no exception and sweeps through with all the beauty of a medium bodied, cool climate wine. Pretty aromas and dancy fruit through the mouth, it just has a lovely weight - the kind you want to race back more for and quickly. Fine white pepper sits in the background and shimmers in the light of red plums and cherries. The longer I befriend it the more it furrows it's brow gaining momentum to get deep. A hint of minerality raises its hand at the death but that black pepper spicy finish just seems to just roll on and on. A fabulous wine really." QWINE

93 Points "A glossy deep red in the glass, the nose has ripe plum and mulberry fruit with overtones of milk chocolate and cedar like spice. The palate shows a medium to full bodied wine that is generous in its disposition, yet textured and balanced when it comes to impact of fine tannin and well handled acidity. The finish has spice and drive of black fruits with pepper and earth a final embellishment." Winereviewer, Peter Eckel

93 Points  "Spiced pepper and milk choc oak with earthy, almost tobacco influences before more fruit driven compounds emerge: plum, dark cherry and even a touch of just picked blackberry. Assertive and confident while staying truly mid-bodied. The fruit is even and persistent with a fine floor of tannin. Clean and bright to finish with well judged spice and lift." Vinonotebook, Regan Drew

92 Points  "This is such a good example of the cooler climate shiraz from a great year in the Great Southern. It has slightly blue fruit characters with a mix of spices and black pepper contributing to its lift and energy. Velvety smooth with a fine tannin and silky oak integration, it all stacks up well as a wine for drinking over the next few years." Ray Jordan, Winepilot

92 Points  "Medium in weight, spiced enough, signs of peppercorns and toast, black cherried through its core but then juicy and red berried through the finish. It’s a careful wine, soft and friendly, with just enough shape, just enough nudge." The Winefront, Campbell Mattinson

"Castle Rock Estate 2018 #greatsouthern #shiraz What a fabulous wine!!Inky purple in colour, lovely cool climate bouquet with a hint of pepper + some herbs, divine ubber tasty, well rounded palate with gentle tannins on the finish- RARING TO GO RIGHT NOW!!" Wine Assist, Dan Traucki

"This Castle Rock Estate 2018 Shiraz from the Great Southern region of WA displays deep dense mulberry colour on first pour. On the nose, there is an initial delivery of oak-driven aromas which soon meld with the expected primary varietal characteristics. The nose and palate are redolent of black / blueberries, white pepper and mixes herbs. Mid-palate astringency and the 13.8% Alc warmth soon round off the initial angularity. This all results in a textural, savoury Shiraz with ongoing wafts of cherry and leathery tobacco which keep evolving on breathing. This is another well-assembled Shiraz by winemaker Rob Diletti, reflective of its regionality [one can almost smell and taste the maritime mineral influence] and dedicated elevage. Our examplar was enjoyed over two nights without loss of character or depth. It can be drunk now with hearty protein meals or put away for a few years cellaring." The Grape Hunter, Gilbert Labour
